Since Twitter’s inception in 2006, its defining feature has been its 140-character limit. This restriction, designed to encourage brevity, has shaped the way users communicate on the platform. But big changes are on the horizon that aim to enhance, rather than eliminate, this hallmark feature.
While the 140-character cap will remain, it will now come with more flexibility. Media attachments—such as images, videos, and polls—will no longer count toward the character limit, leaving more room for actual text. Additionally, when replying to tweets, @mentions will no longer eat into the character count, giving users more space to engage in meaningful conversation.
Another update will allow users to retweet and quote their own tweets, making it easier to resurface old content and provide new context or commentary.
Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey explained the motivation behind these changes:
“We’re focused on making Twitter a whole lot easier and faster. This is what Twitter is great at—what’s happening now, live conversation, and the simplicity that we started the service with.”
The company emphasized that these updates are designed to preserve Twitter’s unique sense of brevity and speed, key elements that make it an ideal platform for real-time discussions.
These changes are part of Twitter’s broader strategy to address slow user growth. With around 310 million users, Twitter still lags behind competitors like LinkedIn and is far from Facebook’s 1.65 billion active users. As a result, the company has faced concerns from investors, with shares reportedly falling by nearly two-thirds over the past year due to worries about Twitter’s future direction.
Though there’s no firm date for when these changes will be implemented, Twitter has indicated they will roll out over the coming months.
